The City of Phoenix Water Services Department (WSD) provides high quality, reliable and cost effective water and wastewater services to businesses and about 1.5 million residents within a service area of 540 square miles.
The Phoenix WSD chief infrastructure includes:
- 5 water treatment plants with a capacity of 600 million gallons per day (MGD)
- 3 wastewater treatment/water reclamation plants with a capacity of about 250 MGD
- 380,000 water service connections
- 6,400 miles of water mains
- 4,500 miles of sewer mains
The Five-Year Water and Wastewater Capital Improvement Program (CIP) budget for the 2006-07 to 2011-12 fiscal years is approximately $1.5 billion.
A Water Resource Plan for the department is updated every five years to develop and maintain sufficient, sustainable, high quality water supplies and related infrastructure to meet current and future customer demands during both normal and drought conditions.
An extremely well-managed water supply provides tap water even during the current extended drought. A continuous 25 year-old water conservation awareness program has assisted with lowering per capita water usage.
