The East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) supplies water to 1.3 million people and provides wastewater treatment for 640,000 people in parts of Alameda and Contra Costa counties on the eastern side of San Francisco Bay in northern California. EBMUD has a long-standing reputation for high-quality water and wastewater services and environmental responsibility.

EBMUD is a publicly-owned utility formed under the Municipal Utility District Act passed by the California Legislature in 1921. EBMUD is governed by a seven-member Board of Directors, publicly elected to represent geographic wards.
